This is a day that New Zealanders will always remember. 50 New Zealanders lost their lives in an unprecedented act of violence. We held a school service in solidarity with all New Zealanders who reacted with shock, disbelief and compassion.
In our Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern’s words; “Many of those who will have been directly affected by this shooting may be migrants to New Zealand; they may even be refugees here,” she said. “They have chosen to make New Zealand their home, and it is their home. They are us. The person who has perpetuated this violence against us is not. They have no place in New Zealand. There is no place in New Zealand for such acts of extreme and unprecedented violence.”
Student Leaders
Congratulations to our head boy, Joel Newport, and our head girl, Grace Mindoro – who successfully applied for and won these roles in 2019 having carried this mantle of responsibility proudly in 2018. We look forward to seeing their ideas and input throughout this school year.
2.30pm end to the school day
The Board of Trustees considered the 2.30pm end to the school day at the March Board meeting. We looked at feedback received from the school survey, and also considered the viewpoints expressed in person to the principal at a feedback meeting and from individual meetings. A decision has been made to keep the 2.30pm finish in place until the end of 2019. A further round of data gathering will be carried out in Term 3 with a final decision made by the end of Term 3. Our school community will be fully informed about the final decision at this time so that everyone has a full term’s notice before the start of the 2020 school year.
April Holidays
We are in the ninth week of the first term and just one week away from the school holiday break. Easter and ANZAC public holidays are included in this year’s two week school break. Please note that the last day of term is Friday 12 April and we will be returning to school on Monday 29th April.
Your questions, comments, wonderings and affirmations of what we are doing in our kura are always welcome.
Animal Visitors to School
As a rule, animals are not allowed on our school premises. If for any reason, you do need to bring a family pet into school, we ask that you take full responsibility for it’s care while you are on site as we need to ensure the safety of all of our students e.g. Dogs must be on a leash if they come in to the school grounds.

Theatresports off to great start for 2019!
Raglan Area School enters their third year of competing at the Waikato Secondary School Theatresports competition, and they certainly have created quite a reputation to uphold within this time-frame. In the first year they took out the regional competition with the win, and last year they came in second place, with only 1 point separating them to first place.
Theatresports are improvisational games where students make up scenes on the spot within a 3-4 minutes time-frame. Teams battle it out in a night of improvisational fun for all ages. Each team is judged for entertainment, technique and storyline. Games consist of 4 rounds played throughout the year. If teams end up in the top 4 of the leaderboard they then qualify to enter the finals in August.
This year we entered not just one, but two teams; a Junior Secondary (Y9-10) and the new Senior Secondary (Y11-13) team. At Round 1 games they both showed once again that we are a force to be reckoned with, with the teams taking home a double win for Raglan. We look forward to see where they sit on the leaderboard and wish them well for their Round 2 game which is held Monday May 20th at Meteor Theatre in Hamilton.

My name is Grace and I am a multicultural young lady willing to see everyone’s point of view from all areas of the school. I am a very hard worker and someone with a friendly and positive approach to work. I am a confident and natural leader who would not take advantage of this position. I consistently aim to perform well and provide high standards for any task set, delivering them within the selected time period. Being Head Girl means that I play a key role within the school community. I will make myself approachable for every student within the school. I will make everyone feel comfortable speaking to me about any concerns and inquiries within the kura. I will represent every student with pride. I will represent the school in a positive way. I am willing to help the students of this kura with the best of my ability. I am also willing to bring along fantastic ideas to help our school for the better. From all ages I am willing to be the voice of the students attending R.A.S. I believe that this opportunity will develop my public speaking and leadership skills which will be useful later on in my life. “He waka eke noa” “A canoe which we are all in with no exception” I believe that our goals cannot be achieved unless we all work together. In saying that “my humanity exists in your humanity” or “my excellence is found in your excellence”. I also believe that we are all in this together. A reminder for me that leadership is not something that you do by yourself; you do it in conjunction with others.

Hey there everyone!
If you don’t already know me, my name is Joel, and I would very much like to take the opportunity to introduce myself as the Head Boy for Raglan Area School for 2019.
I am a year 13 student who is very interested and keen to get involved in our Kura and our community. I am a happy, friendly person who strives to do my best at everything I set my mind to. My goal for 2019 is to represent the students with pride and integrity inside the school and out in the real world. As I am Head Boy, this means that I need to represent well, be well respected by my peers and staff, and to also be easily approachable to everyone. As I was a part of the student leadership team last year as Head Boy, I aim to better enhance my skills as a leader and I take the opportunity to work on and to develop my skills to further represent the school.
I look forward to meeting you all and to create stronger connections
