What an action packed Term 2! The Year 5-6 Camp to CYC Ngaruawahia was a huge success, many thanks to the whanau who supported Whaea Alison and her team, this was certainly a highlight for the teachers and tamariki.
Our Pink shirt day – it was great to see PINK day supported throughout the kura. This is an important Kaupapa for school and community wide. It is not okay to bully, please let us know straight away if there are any issues around bullying.
Our recent Teacher Only Day was tīno rawe!! A big ngā mihi to Lisa, Michelle and Lara who presented a Te Tiriti O Waitangi workshop to all our staff. This exhibit was previously showcased to the community and it is important learning. Thank you whānau for supporting our teachers to attend these professional development hui.
We said a sad farewell to one of our most popular junior teachers – Whaea Jade who is embarking on her big OE trip this year. She will be an Au Pair for a whanau in Oxford and I can imagine living her best life. Arohanui Whaea Jade, thank you for all your hard work, the staff and tamariki will miss you. We are very lucky to welcome back Whaea Wendy who will be the kaiako in C1 for the remainder of 2024.
You would have received a home pack with information about JUMPING JUNE 2024. We have a planned event at Kura on Tuesday 2nd July (Week 10). We have chosen to support this fundraiser because most of us will know someone who has received help through the Heart Foundation. We have organized some fun “jumping events” and challenges for our tamariki. This fundraiser is optional and is administered all online through the Heart Foundation. For more info please click on the link https://www.jumpingjune.co.nz/.
Important Message
We know parents love to drop off their tamariki in the mornings – supervision begins at 8.30am, many students are being dropped off well before this time, even when it’s cold and rainy, please be mindful that our gates open at 8.20am. Please ensure you “Kiss and Leave” your child by the time the bell goes at 8:45am. Teaching and learning begins at 8:50am and gates are locked soon after. We ask that you respect the teaching spaces so that learning can occur with minimal distractions.
Again, at the end of the day please arrive close to 3pm, when you arrive early it can cause disruptions and it is important that teachers are able to give end of day instructions including a Karakia before the tamariki are dismissed.

Term 2 Highlights
Pink Shirt Day
On May 17th it was Pink Shirt Day all over the country. At Raglan Area School we understand the importance of anti-bullying and kindness. Around the start of the term Matuta Joe and Whaea Betty arranged a team of students to lead Pink Shirt Day. We arranged a bake sale, a kindness rock hunt, a special assembly for all of the Year 9 students Matua Joe talked about what truly makes people happy, and about kindness. Our guest speaker was Matuta Johnny. Matua Johnny was there to tell us about how his life changed after he was diagnosed with cancer. He explained that he used to be a security guard, so he had to act tough. But when the doctor told him that he had developed cancer, that changed his view on life. All his life he has welcomed every person he saw and shared his love for life and people.
The Colour Run
Everyone was preparing for the colour run, white shirts and lots of coloured corn flour ready to throw. A track was set using fences, obstacles like a net or tyres you have to jump through and a waterslide. The teachers were armed with paint. The race started. Every student dashed along the track, getting drenched in colour. Some people chose to walk, while others went as fast as they could. Even some teachers got covered in the colourful corn flour. At the end of the day everyone had a good time, and were all covered in colour.
Year 11 Careers Expo
Usually we start the week with double science, but this week we drove to the “New Zealand Careers Expo” in Kirikiriroa with Whaea Linda, Matua Larry and Matua Brendan, as well as some awesome parents. The Expo had a variety of interesting things to do and learn about for example; virtual reality at the aviation training stand, Milk bottle toss at the Fontera stand and heaps of free stuff such as lollies, pens and other trinkets everywhere else. We also learnt lots of interesting information about the different career options such as New Zealand Police, New Zealand School of Tourism and even game creation with Media Design.
From this experience we have learned about a variety of options that could be potential career paths. We believe that these expo’s are great because they give us young people an insight into the different career options that we may want to pursue.
