Kia ora e te whānau
As summer is nearing and curiosity is rising about our school pool, we thought it would be timely to share an update on progress.
Our swimming pool has a concrete base that has a crack and slow leak in it. The previous solution was to purchase a liner for the pool. Not only did this make the pool water proof again, it also increased the pool temperature.
Unfortunately over the past 3 to 4 years the liner has deteriorated to the point that it is now beyond repair. The BOT have created a swimming pool working group who have been looking at the best options for our swimming pool moving forward. The group removed the liner and asked a number of companies to recommend and quote how best to restore the pool.
One of the options is to fibreglass the pool. This provides a long term solution that is guaranteed for the next ten years. The working group are also looking at options for solar hot water and salt water treatment.
In the meantime, the working group is also looking at temporary fixes to get the pool operational for the summer. However, caution is needed to ensure this isn’t a waste of time and money if a permanent solution becomes funded.
The next step is to secure funding for the long term restoration. The Ministry of Education does not provide funding for swimming pools anymore so it is up to us as a community to raise the funds required for this restoration. If there are any groups or individuals out there with some mass fundraising ideas or tips on how best to raise large quantities of money, we’d love to hear from you! We are also looking to apply for a number of grants to support this project.
